Gioji temple

The temple was originally founded in the 11th century, but was later rebuilt in the 17th century. The main building is a thatched-roof structure that houses a statue of the Buddha Amida.

The temple’s moss garden is a highlight of the visit, with over 1,200 square meters of lush green moss covering the ground and the surrounding trees and rocks. The garden is designed to create a serene and calming atmosphere, and visitors are often struck by the quiet beauty of the surroundings.

Gio-ji Temple is also known for its association with the tragic story of the Heian period court dancer, Gio. According to legend, Gio was a famous dancer who fell in love with a high-ranking court official. When the official rejected her, Gio became a nun and retired to Gio-ji Temple, where she spent the rest of her life in prayer and meditation.

Today, visitors to Gio-ji Temple can still see the small hut where Gio is said to have lived. The hut is located in the moss garden, and visitors can imagine the quiet contemplation and spiritual devotion of the famous dancer-turned-nun.
