Why Visit Pistoia Zoo?

Tuscany is known for its art, history, and landscape, but Pistoia Zoo offers a unique opportunity to experience nature in a fun and educational way. Founded in 1970, Pistoia Zoo is home to more than 400 animals spread across 7 hectares. The zoo is committed to animal welfare and is constantly working to improve enclosures and habitats for its animals. Whether it’s a break from sightseeing or a fun family activity, the zoo offers a few hours of enjoyment.

Must-See Animals

Pistoia Zoo is home to a wide variety of animals from all over the world. Highlights include:

  • Penguins: In the popular penguin enclosure, visitors can see these playful creatures underwater.
  • Lions and Tigers: The big cats are a major attraction, but they may not always be visible during the day.
  • Giraffes: These gentle giants often approach the fences, making for close encounters that children especially enjoy.
  • Reptiles and Insects: Snakes, crocodiles, and even a buzzing cockroach can be found in the tropical museum.
  • Meerkats and Red Pandas: Don’t miss the adorable meerkats, which can be viewed through a tunnel with special observation bubbles for children.

Things Not to Miss

  • Petting Zoo: Get up close with goats, sheep, and other domestic animals.
  • Playground: A large, well-maintained playground is perfect for families with young children to take a break.
  • Aldabra Elephant Turtles: The Aldabra turtles are a highlight for many visitors.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

  • Arrive Early: Starting your day at the zoo will help you avoid the midday heat and give you ample time to explore all the exhibits.
  • Make a Route Map: Pick up a map at the entrance and plan your route. Start with the big hill when your group has the most energy.
  • Take Breaks: There are plenty of benches and shaded areas to relax and enjoy the scenery between exhibits.
  • Interact with the Staff: The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Don’t hesitate to ask them about the animals and conservation efforts.

Visiting Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: The animals are most active in the mornings. Weekdays are less crowded, and the zoo is quieter during the school year.
  • Clothing: The zoo is hilly, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. While there is plenty of shade, sunscreen and a hat are recommended for sunnier areas.
  • Picnic Lunch: There are picnic tables throughout the zoo, perfect for a family picnic. A snack bar and a small restaurant offering simple meals like paninis are also available.

Access

The zoo is conveniently located about 45 km from Florence. If you’re driving, take the A11/E76 toward Pisa and exit at Pistoia Ovest. From there, it’s a short drive to the large, free parking lot right next to the entrance. Public transportation is available but less convenient. From Florence’s SITA train station, take a bus or train to Pistoia, then a bus or cab to the zoo.

Opening Hours: 09:30 AM – 04:30 PM

Ticket Prices:

  • Adults: €16
  • Children (3-12 years): €10
  • Under 2 years: Free
  • Family Pass: Annual fee available.
