Temple of Poseidon

Via Magna Graecia, 917, 84047 Capaccio SA, Italy

The Temple of Poseidon is often called the Temple of Hera II since a number of inscriptions and statuettes related to the goddess Hera were found nearby during the excavations. The temple has six columns along its shorter front sides and fourteen columns along its longer sides. Besides, the columns have a very strong entasis or curvature down their length. The interior of the temple is divided into three main naves marked by rows of columns. The central columns, stairwells and fragments of frescoes are in an excellent state of preservation.

Additional information

The Temple of Poseidon, also known as the Poseidonion, is an ancient Greek temple located on the southern tip of the Attica peninsula, about 70 kilometers southeast of Athens. It was built in the 5th century BCE to honor Poseidon, the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses.

The temple was constructed using white marble, and it features a rectangular floor plan with six columns on the short sides and thirteen columns on the long sides. It was designed in the Doric style of architecture, which is characterized by its simple, sturdy columns and triangular pediments.

The Temple of Poseidon is located on a rocky promontory overlooking the Aegean Sea, and it is considered one of the most magnificent ancient temples in Greece. It was an important religious center in ancient times, and it was also a popular destination for sailors who would stop there to offer sacrifices to Poseidon before continuing their voyages.

Today, the Temple of Poseidon is a popular tourist attraction, and visitors can take in the stunning views of the sea from the temple’s elevated position. The site is open to visitors year-round, and there is a small museum on-site that displays artifacts from the temple’s history.

The Temple of Poseidon is a remarkable example of ancient Greek architecture and a testament to the importance of Poseidon in Greek mythology and religion. It is a must-see destination for anyone interested in history, architecture, or mythology.
