Santa Maria della Scala
Located in the heart of Siena, Italy, the Santa Maria della Scala is a historic site that offers a rich experience in art, history, and culture. Once one of the oldest hospitals in Europe, the building now serves as a museum complex that displays centuries-old treasures of art. Whether you are an art lover or a history buff, Santa Maria della Scala has something for everyone. In this guidebook, you will find helpful sightseeing tips, must-see attractions, and practical information.
Highlights of Santa Scala
Santa Maria della Scala has several must-see attractions that will give you an insight into Siena’s history and its artistic heritage.
Pellegrinaio Hall
The most famous hall in Santa Maria della Scala is the Pellegrinaio Hall (Pilgrim’s Room), which was once used as a hospital room for pilgrims and the sick. Frescoes painted by artists such as Domenico di Bartolo depict scenes of charity and daily life in the 15th century hospital. These frescoes are stunning examples of early Renaissance art and should not be missed by tourists.
Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Cappella della Madonna (Chapel of the Virgin Mary) is another must-see. It houses an amazing collection of religious art, including frescoes of the Virgin Mary, symbolizing the hospital’s deep religious roots. The architecture and decoration of the chapel reflect the Gothic and Renaissance styles.
Archaeological Museum
The Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico), located in the basement of the hospital, displays artifacts from the Etruscan, Roman, and Medieval periods. Visitors can get acquainted with the ancient history of Siena and the surrounding area.
Children’s Museum
The Museum for Children (Museo d’Arte per Bambini) is an innovative section of Santa Maria that offers educational exhibits designed to engage young visitors. Interactive exhibits and workshops allow children to explore the arts in a fun and informative way.
