Getting There

Santa Maddalena is situated in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, specifically in the Alto Adige province, also known as Südtirol. The village can be accessed by car, with parking available further from the church. The closest major city is Bolzano, from where you can take public transport or drive.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Santa Maddalena is in the late afternoon. This timing ensures that the sun illuminates the mountains beautifully, avoiding the shadows that can obscure the landscape during midday.

Parking and Accessibility

There is limited parking space (3-4 cars) directly below the hill where the church is located. Most visitors park further away for a fee of €4 and walk approximately 15-20 minutes uphill to the church. The pathways are generally accessible, with some sections suitable for motorbikes.

Things to See and Do

Chiesa di Santa Maddalena

The Chiesa di Santa Maddalena is a must-visit. This small Gothic church is set against the dramatic Odle mountains, offering spectacular views and a serene atmosphere. Inside, you’ll find boldly colored paintings and ornate wooden decor typical of the region. According to local legend, the church was built where a miraculous image of St. Magdalene was found.

Hiking Trails

Santa Maddalena offers numerous trails that cater to various levels of hikers. These trails lead from the village up to the church and beyond, providing panoramic views of the valley and the Odle peaks. Walking along these trails not only offers stunning photo opportunities but also a chance to experience the natural beauty of the Dolomites up close.

Nature Park House

To learn more about the unique flora, fauna, and geology of the Dolomites, visit the Nature Park House of Santa Maddalena. This educational center is great for both adults and children, offering insights into the natural history of the region.

St. Johann Church in Ranui

A short distance from Santa Maddalena is the St. Johann Church in Ranui, a small baroque church built in 1744. This church is known for its picturesque setting and beautiful interior, making it a worthwhile stop.

Tips for Tourists

  • Weather: Always check the weather forecast before your visit. Clear skies enhance the beauty of the landscapes and are ideal for photography.
  • Footwear: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the walk from the parking area to the church is uphill.
  • Timing: Plan your visit for the late afternoon to get the best light for viewing and photographing the mountains.
  • Events: If possible, plan your trip around local events like the Speckfest, which takes place the first weekend of October. This festival celebrates the local smoked ham, speck, with food, drinks, and cultural activities.

Opening Hours: Mid-April to 31 October, Friday and Saturday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
