Santa Maddalena is situated in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, specifically in the Alto Adige province, also known as Südtirol. The village can be accessed by car, with parking available further from the church. The closest major city is Bolzano, from where you can take public transport or drive.
The ideal time to visit Santa Maddalena is in the late afternoon. This timing ensures that the sun illuminates the mountains beautifully, avoiding the shadows that can obscure the landscape during midday.
There is limited parking space (3-4 cars) directly below the hill where the church is located. Most visitors park further away for a fee of €4 and walk approximately 15-20 minutes uphill to the church. The pathways are generally accessible, with some sections suitable for motorbikes.
Chiesa di Santa Maddalena
The Chiesa di Santa Maddalena is a must-visit. This small Gothic church is set against the dramatic Odle mountains, offering spectacular views and a serene atmosphere. Inside, you’ll find boldly colored paintings and ornate wooden decor typical of the region. According to local legend, the church was built where a miraculous image of St. Magdalene was found.
Hiking Trails
Santa Maddalena offers numerous trails that cater to various levels of hikers. These trails lead from the village up to the church and beyond, providing panoramic views of the valley and the Odle peaks. Walking along these trails not only offers stunning photo opportunities but also a chance to experience the natural beauty of the Dolomites up close.
