Tiberina Island

Tiberina, a small island shaped like a boat, is located in Rome in the middle of the River Tiber.

In ancient times the island was of special importance as the best place to cross the river. Due to this fact it was the place where traditionally a lot of construction works were carried out.

The island is also considered to be a place for medical treatment. In 293 BC during the plague epidemic a temple to the god of healing Aesculapius was built by the decision of the Senate. Nowadays a “Jewish hospital” is placed here.

Besides, right near Tiberina you can see ruins of the Ponte Rotto Bridge and a few meters further there is the Theatre of Marcellus.
