The Theatre of Marcellus

The ancient Rome theatre the ruins of which you can see today was planned by Julius Caesar and built by the Emperor Augustus. The construction was completed in 12 BC. Augustus dedicated the theatre to his nephew Marcus Marcellus and named it after him. Later the theatre was turned into a fortress.

The Theatre of Marcellus

The entire area is full of ancient Roman monuments. Not far from the Theatre of Marcellus you can see the Portico d’Ottavia. A few dozen meters from it there are two temples such as the Temple of Portunus and a circular shaped Temple of Vesta which in reality is the Temple of Hercules dating back to 2nd century BC.

The Temple of Apollo Sosianus

Near the Temple of Hercules there is the Triton Fountain (1715). A few meters from it you can see the Basilica of Saint Mary in Cosmedin which is famous for the fact that the world known Mouth of Truth is located there. At a short distance away, right on the bank of the River Tiber stands the Great Synagogue of Rome.
