Colosseum

The Colosseum is the most recognizable building in our world. It’s the largest Amphitheatre the construction of which started in 72 AD and was completed 80 AD. The Colosseum was constructed by the emperor Titus on the site of the lake in Golden House of Nero.

Up to 405 AD the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests, public performances and even “sea battles”. The bottom of the Colosseum was filled with water for the warships to move around. The Colosseum is considered to be a sacred site in memory of Christian martyrs who were perished there.

The first thing that shocked me at the Colosseum was a two hundred meters long queue on a normal September day. Luckily we bought tickets to the Forum. As I’ve written above, it’s an entire ticket both to the Forum and the Coloseum).

I would like to share my impressions of the Colosseum. It’s a very impressive building from the outside but I cannot say there is something special about it from the inside. Let’s say I wouldn’t visit both the Colosseum and the Forum again. View the photos of the Colosseum and judge for yourself.

Not far from the Colosseum in Via Eudossiana you can see a church called San Pietro in Vincoli.
