Located in the heart of San Gimignano (Tuscany), Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall), Pinacoteca, and Torre Grossa offer a journey through the art, history, and architecture of this fascinating medieval town. Whether you are a history buff, an art lover, or simply want to enjoy the stunning scenery, this iconic destination should be at the top of your list. Here is everything you need to know to plan your visit.

A Step into History: Palazzo Comunale and Pinacoteca

Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) stands as a testament to San Gimignano’s rich medieval history. Built between 1289 and 1298, this historic building was once the governing body of the town. Today, it houses the Civic Museum (Musei Civici), including the Pinacoteca (Picture Gallery). Visitors can tour the beautifully decorated council chambers, including the Dante Room, where the poet Dante Alighieri once addressed the town’s leaders.

In the Pinacoteca, visitors can learn about the evolution of art from the 13th to the 15th century, featuring works by Lippo Memmi, Taddeo di Bartolo, and Pinturicchio. The Sala di Dante houses Lippo Memmi’s 14th-century fresco “Maestà,” a masterpiece celebrating the Virgin Mary as the patroness of the city.

Must-See Art Pieces

  • “Maestà” by Lippo Memmi (1317)
  • “San Gimignano on the Throne” by Taddeo di Bartolo (1401)
  • “The Virgin Assunta and the Saints” by Pinturicchio (1511)

Although the Pinacoteca is relatively small, its collection provides a deep insight into San Gimignano’s medieval and Renaissance artistic heritage.

Mountaineering Torre Grossa

For the adventurous, Torre Grossa (Great Tower) promises breathtaking rewards. At 54 meters (177 feet) tall, it is the tallest structure in San Gimignano and offers panoramic views of the town and the rolling Tuscan countryside. Built between 1300 and 1311, Torre Grossa served as both a watchtower and bell tower, symbolizing the power of the Podestà (the town’s administrator).

Best Time to Visit

  • Early Morning: To avoid crowds, it is best to visit early in the day. The entrance to the top of the tower can get crowded around noon, especially during peak tourist season.
  • Weekdays: If possible, visit on a weekday for a quieter experience.

Points of Interest Not to Be Missed

  • View from the Top: The panoramic view from the top of Torre Grossa offers a spectacular outlook of the Tuscan landscape.
  • Frescoes in the Chambers: Take time to appreciate the intricate details of the frescoes in the Dante Room.
  • Pinacoteca Art: Even if you are not an art fan, the historical significance of these works is worth noting.

Accessibility and Amenities

While the museum and tower provide a wonderful experience, Torre Grossa is not accessible for the physically challenged due to the many stairs. However, there are places to rest in the middle of the tower and enjoy the view from the lower floors.

There are no restrooms on the grounds of Palazzo Comunale, so plan accordingly. There are several cafes and restaurants nearby to rest and use the facilities.
