Exploring the Pedestrian Zone

Ortisei’s pedestrian area stretches primarily between the Church of S. Ulrich and the Church of S. Antonio. This enchanting zone is particularly delightful in the evening when the historic buildings and elegant late nineteenth-century hotels are beautifully illuminated.

Highlights of the Pedestrian Zone

  • Historic Churches: Begin your stroll at the Church of S. Ulrich and continue to the Church of S. Antonio, both landmarks steeped in history.
  • Ice Sculptures: Don’t miss the enormous ice sculptures along the river and the iconic ice chaise longue in the center, perfect for memorable photos.
  • Artisanal Shops: The area is dotted with charming wooden gift shops offering rare and elegant pieces, ideal for unique souvenirs.
  • Gastronomy: Indulge in delicious artisanal ice cream and a variety of local culinary delights at the cafes and restaurants.

What to See and Do

Evening Walks

Ortisei’s pedestrian zone transforms into a fairy-tale setting in the evening. The lights enhance the beauty of the historic architecture, creating a magical atmosphere perfect for leisurely walks.

Shopping

Ortisei is a shopper’s paradise. From modern ski apparel to high fashion, the variety of stores ensures there’s something for everyone. After shopping, relax in one of the many restaurants that offer a range of local and international cuisines.

Cultural Experiences

The village is also a hub for art and culture. Visit the Ladin Museum to learn about the local history or attend the annual UNIKA art fair to see works by local artists.

Getting There

By Car: Take the A22 (Autostrada del Brennero) and exit at Val Gardena / Chiusa. Follow the signs to Val Gardena, and Ortisei is about a 15-minute drive from there.

By Train: There are good IC and EC train connections from Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and Belgium to Bressanone, Chiusa, or Bolzano. From these stations, regular bus services are available to Ortisei.

By Air: The nearest airports are Bolzano (36 km), Innsbruck (120 km), and Verona (190 km).

Accommodation

For a central and convenient stay, consider the Tlusel apartments located right in the pedestrian zone. This central location provides easy access to ski lifts, bus stops, shops, and restaurants.

Best Time to Visit

While Ortisei is beautiful year-round, the pedestrian zone is particularly enchanting during the winter months when it resembles a Christmas fairy tale. However, summer offers pleasant weather and vibrant cultural events.

Getting Around

The pedestrian zone is compact and walkable. Everything is within easy reach, including ski lifts to Alpe di Siusi and Seceda, swimming pools, and the bus station.

Safety

While the pedestrian area is generally safe, caution is advised on the outskirts of Ortisei, especially when navigating traffic.

Enhancements and Regulations

Ortisei’s pedestrian zone has recently undergone improvements, including new pavement and street furniture, enhancing its appeal. To maintain the pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, vehicle access is regulated with a mobile bollard system that only allows entry to those with special permits.
