Sections:

Highlights of the Collection

Topographic Section
The Topographic Section presents a wide range of archaeological results from the region, with an emphasis on material excavated in the urban area, the Chianti region, and the upper Val d’Elsa. This section is particularly attractive to visitors interested in understanding the archaeological context of Siena and its surroundings.

Antiquarium
The Antiquarium houses the museum’s core public and private collections. The main exhibits include artifacts discovered by chance and materials excavated from residences near Sarteano and Casole d’Elsa; in the early 1950s, the collection was greatly expanded with the addition of the collections of Chigi Zondadari and Bonci Cazzuccini. The former collection was acquired by the Marquis Bonaventura Chigi Zondadari and includes objects reflecting local history and items acquired from the antique market.

Notable Artifacts
Visitors should not miss the opportunity to view several notable artifacts, including:

  • Grave goods from the pit tombs and circular tombs of Sferracavalli.
  • A travertine vase from the Marcuni tomb in Molinello.
  • An impressive collection of votive objects.
  • A relief depicting the “Musees of Kigi,” which is thought to date back to the Adriatic period and may have depicted the poet Sappho as the Musees.
  • Stunning portraits called “pseudo-Seneca” that add depth to the museum’s exhibits.

What Not to Miss

  • Interactive exhibits: If there is an interactive exhibit that will help you better understand the history and background of the artifact, be sure to participate.
  • Temporary Exhibits: Look out for temporary exhibits that offer new insights into archaeology or highlight a particular theme.

Planning Your Visit: Tips for Tourists

Best Time to Visit
To avoid crowds, we recommend visiting on weekdays, especially early in the morning. Expect crowds on the first Sunday of the month, when admission is free.

Guided Tours
To get a better understanding of the collection, we recommend booking a guided tour. You can arrange for a personal guide or visit pin-si.comunicazione@cultura.gov.it.

Amenities
The museum is equipped with a variety of amenities for the convenience of visitors, including restrooms and barrier-free facilities. However, some reviews indicate problems with the cleanliness of the restrooms, so visitors are advised to check the status of these facilities.

Access

  • By Public Transportation: Siena is well served by public transportation, with frequent buses from major cities such as Florence and Pisa. The museum is within walking distance of the main bus station.
  • By Car: If you are arriving by car, parking in the city center is limited. Please find a designated parking space and walk to the museum.

Accessibility

For visitors with mobility impairments, the museum strives to provide universal accessibility. We recommend that you check with the Museum in advance to ensure that any necessary accommodations are made.
