The Mole Antonelliana in Turin, Italy is a famous landmark known for its impressive height and rich history. Originally designed as a synagogue, this architectural marvel now houses the National Museum of Cinema. With its breathtaking views, fascinating exhibits, and unique history, it is a must-visit for any traveler.

History of the Mole Antonelliana

Construction and Architectural Feats

The construction of the Mole Antonelliana began in 1863 under the guidance of architect Alessandro Antonelli. Initially intended to be a synagogue, the project underwent significant changes as Antonelli continued to build upwards, eventually reaching a height of 167.5 meters. The structure was completed in 1889, seven months after Antonelli’s death, and it became the tallest brick building in Europe at that time.

Transformations Over Time

Originally planned to have a five-pointed star at its top, the tower was instead adorned with a statue of a winged genie, often mistaken for an angel. Over the years, the building has endured lightning strikes and storms, leading to the replacement of the topmost ornament. The Mole housed the Museo del Risorgimento from 1908 until 1938 and has been home to the National Museum of Cinema since 2000.

Legends and Mysticism

Nietzsche’s Affection: German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche was a notable admirer of the Mole Antonelliana. He saw a connection between the building and his character Zarathustra, and nicknamed it ‘Ecce Homo,’ after one of his books.

Student Superstitions: A popular legend among students warns against climbing the tower or even looking at its tip before graduation, as it is believed to bring bad luck in exams.

Energy Antenna: Some believe that the Mole acts as an antenna for positive energy due to its pyramidal base and towering spire, adding to its mystical aura.
