Maremma National Park, spanning approximately 40,000 hectares, is a true gem within Tuscany’s vast natural landscape. Renowned for its diverse ecosystems and commitment to conserving biodiversity, the park serves as a paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. This guide offers essential tips for tourists, highlights must-see attractions, and provides practical information for planning a visit to this awe-inspiring park.

Exploring the Park

Diverse Ecosystems

The park’s landscape is primarily characterized by the Monti dell’Uccellina, a range of hills parallel to the coast. It is covered in dense scrub, with the highest peak, Poggio Lecci, reaching 417 meters. The northern region features wetlands formed by the Ombrone River mouth, while the coastal area boasts sandy beaches, bays, and cliffs that stretch for 25 km from Talamone to Principina a Mare. Notable ecosystems within the park include the pine forest in Marina di Alberese and various habitats that support a wide range of flora and fauna.

Wildlife Highlights

During migration seasons, Maremma National Park becomes a sanctuary for numerous bird species. Key nesting birds include:

  • Kentish plover
  • Roller
  • Stone-curlew
  • Reintroduced osprey

Birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon, kestrel, buzzard, and barn owl are also prominently found in the park. Additionally, the park is a natural habitat for wild horses and cattle, with herds of Maremma cows grazing freely. Other wildlife species found in the park include hares, hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, porcupines, wild boars, roe deer, fallow deer, as well as coastal carnivores like the wildcat and wolf.

Historical Landmarks

Despite its lush vegetation, the park is also home to several historical landmarks. Scattered throughout the landscape are numerous watchtowers, built in the 15th century as a defense against Saracen pirates. The most significant historical site within the park is the Abbey of San Rabano, a 12th-century Benedictine monastery that later came under the ownership of the Knights of Jerusalem before being abandoned in the 16th century.
