The Lipu Massaciuccoli Nature Reserve (Riserva Naturale del Chiarone) is one of Tuscany’s hidden gems, located in the municipality of Massarosa in the province of Lucca. Situated on the shores of Lake Massaciuccoli, the nature reserve is part of the larger Regional Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, a protected area of more than 60 hectares. Home to more than 150 bird species, this destination is a must-visit for nature lovers, bird watchers, and families seeking a peaceful getaway.

Highlights of Lipu Massaciuccoli

The reserve is famous for its beautiful network of wooden boardwalks that stretch across the lake’s marshland, offering a unique way to explore this natural paradise. Along the 800-meter boardwalk, there are four bird observatories: two overlook the lake, and the other two offer panoramic views of the reed beds. At the end of the boardwalk, an elevated viewing platform provides stunning views, while the nearby charming “Butterfly Garden” adds to the experience.

Bird Watching

Lipu Massaciuccoli is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to migratory birds such as squacco egrets, great egrets, little egrets, marsh harriers, ospreys, and Eurasian spoonbills. The best times to spot these birds are early morning or late afternoon, especially during spring and fall when bird activity peaks. Bring your binoculars and enjoy a close encounter with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Boat and Canoe Tours

Explore Lake Massaciuccoli by boat or canoe. Affordable rentals are available, allowing you to glide silently through the water and get even closer to the birds without disturbing them. Electric motorboats offer a peaceful, eco-friendly option. It’s the ideal way to navigate the lake’s narrow channels and admire its rich biodiversity.

Tips for Visiting Lipu Massaciuccoli

Best seasons: Spring and fall are the prime times for bird watching. However, the reserve is open year-round, with unique discoveries in every season.
What to bring: Comfortable walking shoes, a camera with a zoom lens, and binoculars are recommended. If visiting in summer, don’t forget sunscreen and a hat.
Reservations: While reservations are not usually required for entry, it is recommended to book in advance for guided boat tours. For private canoe or boat rentals, you can generally just show up.
