What to Expect

The Labyrinth Experience

Labirinto Borges is more than just a maze; it is a symbolic journey intended to evoke reflection and meditation. Comprising over 3,000 boxwood plants, the labyrinth forms a pattern that incorporates Borges’ name, his walking stick, hourglasses, and other symbols from his works. The paths, which are approximately one kilometer in length, provide a tranquil walk accompanied by an original soundtrack composed by Antonio Fresa and performed by the Orchestra of the Teatro La Fenice.

Guided Tours and Symbolism

Guided tours offer insights into the origin and significance of the labyrinth. Visitors begin by observing the labyrinth from an aerial perspective, allowing them to fully appreciate its intricate design, before entering and experiencing it firsthand. The labyrinth is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, including children and the visually impaired.

Things to See

The Cini Foundation

After exploring the labyrinth, be sure not to miss the opportunity to visit the Giorgio Cini Foundation. In addition to housing a library with over 300,000 volumes, the foundation hosts exhibitions, concerts, and conferences. The New Manica Lunga, a project designed by architect Michele De Lucchi, adds a modern touch to the historical halls.

The Woods and the Vatican Chapels

Adjacent to the labyrinth, the Bosco (woods) area features the Teatro Verde and the Vatican Chapels, ten chapels constructed for the 2018 Architecture Biennale. These chapels, nestled amidst lush greenery, offer a tranquil retreat and are well worth exploring.

Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore

No visit to San Giorgio Maggiore would be complete without a visit to the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore. Designed by Andrea Palladio, this masterpiece houses significant works of art and provides breathtaking views of Venice from its bell tower. Take the elevator to the top for panoramic vistas of St. Mark’s Basin, the Giudecca Island, and beyond.

Useful Tips

  • Ensure that you book your tickets through the Cini Foundation website in order to secure your visit.
  • To fully enjoy the audio guide and music, bring your own headphones.
  • Late afternoon visits are particularly atmospheric, especially during sunset.
  • Pair your labyrinth tour with visits to the Cini Foundation, the woods, and the basilica for a full day of exploration.
