Nestled in the picturesque high plateau of Hafling-Vöran-Meran 2000 in South Tyrol, Knottnkino is an open-air cinema that offers an unparalleled viewing experience. With 30 handmade steel and wood cinema seats installed on the Rotstein Knott rock outcrop by artist Franz Messner, visitors are invited to sit and take in the breathtaking natural scenery as if they were watching a film. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit to this remarkable destination.

Getting to Knottnkino

By Car

The most convenient starting points are the parking areas near Gasthof Alpenrose, Grüner Baum Inn, and Eggerhof. The walk from these parking lots ranges from 20 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the starting point. Note that parking fees typically apply (€5 per day), and it’s best to bring coins for payment.

Hiking Routes

  • Grüner Baum Inn Route: This route takes about 1.5 hours. Follow trail No. 12a from the Grüner Baum Inn in Verano. The trail is varied, passing through meadows, forests, and rocky areas.
  • Gasthof Alpenrose Route: A shorter, 30-40 minute hike with some steep sections. This trail offers a direct path to Knottnkino with stunning views along the way.
  • Eggerhof Car Park: This is the shortest route, taking approximately 20 minutes. It’s moderately difficult and not suitable for strollers due to uneven paths and roots.

What to See

Panoramic Views

Knottnkino provides spectacular vistas of the Etsch Valley, stretching from the Texelgruppe mountain range near Meran in the north to the Weißhorn in the south. The view changes with the time of day and seasons, making every visit unique.

Knottnkino Trail

For those wanting a more extensive exploration, the Knottnkino³ trail connects three red porphyry rock outcrops—Rotstein, Beimstein, and Timpfler Knott. This circular hike takes about four hours and offers a comprehensive view of the area’s natural beauty.

Annual Events

One of the highlights is the Lorenzinacht event in August, where visitors can watch shooting stars and listen to insights from amateur astronomers. It’s a magical night of stargazing and learning.

Tips for Tourists

  • Best Time to Visit: Clear days are ideal for the best views. Weekends can be crowded, so consider visiting during weekdays for a more tranquil experience.
  • Dress Appropriately: The site can be windy and cooler than expected. Wear layers and bring a jacket, even in warmer months.
  • Parking: Be prepared with coins for the parking fee. The fee is usually €5 per day, payable at the exit.
  • Accessibility: The trails are not suitable for strollers or people with mobility issues due to roots and uneven paths.
  • Bring Supplies: There are no facilities at Knottnkino itself, so pack water, snacks, and anything else you might need.

What Not to Miss

Natural Highlights

Beyond the Knottnkino seating area, the surrounding nature is equally captivating. Explore the nearby rock formations, wetlands, and panoramic viewpoints for a complete experience.
