The Guinigi Tower, a historic structure in Lucca, Italy, is a must-visit for any traveler. This medieval skyscraper, crowned with a garden, offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the city’s rich history. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you plan your visit to this unique landmark.

Historical Background

Built in the 14th century by the prominent Guinigi family, the tower stands as a symbol of their wealth and power. During a time when Lucca had over 250 towers, each representing the status of its owners, the Guinigi Tower is one of the few that remains intact. The Guinigi family, known for their silk trade, designed the tower with a garden atop, featuring holm oaks, symbolizing rebirth and renewal.

Things to See

  • The Garden on Top: The highlight of the Guinigi Tower is undoubtedly its rooftop garden. Walking among the trees, 44.25 meters above the ground, provides a unique experience and offers shade, making it a pleasant spot even on a hot day.
  • Panoramic Views: From the top, visitors can enjoy stunning 360-degree views of Lucca, the Apuan Alps, the Apennines, and the Monte Pisano. The city’s medieval architecture, including its numerous church spires and the Piazza Anfiteatro, can be admired in detail.

Tips for Tourists

  • Best Time to Visit: Visiting during the week, especially early in the morning or late afternoon, can help you avoid crowds. Sunset is a particularly magical time to be at the top.
  • What to Wear: Comfortable shoes are essential for the climb, which involves 230 steps. The stairs are well-maintained, but they do narrow towards the top.
  • Photography: The views from the top are perfect for photography, so bring a camera or smartphone. Binoculars are available for a closer look at distant scenery.

Guinigi Tower

Planning Your Visit

  • Getting There: The tower is located at Via Guinigi, 29, in the heart of Lucca. It’s easily accessible on foot from most parts of the city. If you’re driving, there are parking facilities nearby.
  • Tickets and Pricing: The entrance fee is €8 per adult. Children may have discounted rates. There is no time limit for how long you can stay at the top, allowing you to take in the views at your leisure.
  • Opening Hours: The tower is open daily from 10:00 to 20:30. On special occasions, such as the night of San Lorenzo, it remains open at night, offering a different and romantic perspective of Lucca.

What Not to Miss

  • The Oaks’ Legend: According to local legend, the trees atop the tower lost their leaves when Paolo Guinigi, a member of the Guinigi family, was executed. Another story suggests the oaks symbolize rebirth, a fitting representation for the family’s legacy.
  • Night Visits: If you have the opportunity, visit the tower at night. The city lights create a beautiful contrast with the dark sky, and although the ambient light may obscure the stars, the experience is unforgettable.
