What to See and Do

The Earth Pyramids:

The main attraction is the Earth Pyramids themselves. These towering columns made of clay are crowned with large boulders. They have been shaped by the combined forces of water, ice, and wind over time, resulting in a stunning landscape that changes colors depending on the lighting and weather conditions.

Scenic Hiking Trails:

The trails that lead to the Earth Pyramids offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests. Along the way, you’ll come across various viewpoints that offer different perspectives of the pyramids, making the hike both visually rewarding and educational. The trails are well-maintained and are marked with informative signs about the geology and history of the formations.

Wooden Sculptures and Panoramic Views:

During your hike, you’ll also encounter beautifully crafted wooden sculptures and benches where you can take a break and enjoy the panoramic views. The forested paths provide shade and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a tranquil stroll.

Planning Your Visit

Getting There:

By Car: From the village of Perca, follow the signs for the “Piramidi di Terra” (Earth Pyramids). There is parking available at several points, including P1 Vila di Sopra, which is about a 2-hour walk to the pyramids, P2, which is a 30-40 minute walk, and P3, the closest parking point which is approximately a 15-20 minute walk to the site. Parking costs around 4 euros per day.

By Public Transport: Take a train or bus to Perca, and then transfer to the local Citybus, which makes stops at Vila di Sopra. From there, follow the marked trails to the pyramids.

Hiking Routes:

There are two main routes to reach the Earth Pyramids:

Forest Path (Erdpyramiden/Pyramidenweg): This scenic trail takes about 45 minutes to complete and leads through a dense forest with moderate inclines. It starts from the parking area.

Road Path: This route is more direct and has a gradual incline. It leads to the forest path just before reaching the pyramids.

Both routes offer a pleasant hiking experience and can be combined for a diverse return trip.

Nearby Attractions

Malga Gönneralm

You can extend your hike to Malga Gönneralm, a traditional alpine hut that offers local cuisine and breathtaking views. The hike to Gönneralm adds approximately 3.5 hours and 600 meters of elevation gain, making it a rewarding extension for enthusiastic hikers.

Vedrette di Ries-Aurina Nature Park

Located nearby, this nature park offers additional trails and natural beauty, perfect for those who want to explore more of the South Tyrolean landscape.

Tourist Tips

Best Time to Visit:

While the Earth Pyramids are open year-round, the best time to visit is during the spring and summer months when the weather is mild and the trails are most accessible. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for avoiding both the midday heat and the crowds.

What to Bring:

Make sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes as the trails can be steep and uneven. It’s also recommended to bring water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized during the hike. Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the unique formations and stunning views. Lastly, dress in layers and come prepared for weather changes, especially in the mountainous region.

Opening Hours: Open 24 hours, year-round

Ticket Prices: Free entry; parking fees apply (approximately 4 euros per day)
