Chiesa Parrocchiale della Gran Madre di Dio
Nestled on the right bank of the Po River, facing the expansive Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the Chiesa Parrocchiale della Gran Madre di Dio is a must-visit landmark in Turin, Italy. This neoclassical church, built between 1818 and 1831, celebrates the end of Napoleonic rule and the return of King Vittorio Emanuele I. Inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, the Gran Madre di Dio offers a serene and enriching experience for all visitors, with its stunning architecture and historical significance.
Historical Background
Conceived in 1814, the church was designed by architect Ferdinando Bonsignore following a competition. Construction began in 1818 but paused for nearly a decade, resuming in 1827 under the rule of Charles Felix of Sardinia. Finally, in 1831, the church was inaugurated under Charles Albert of Sardinia. The church’s façade is adorned with statues representing Faith and Religion by Carlo Chelli, and an inscription on the tympanum honors the return of the king.

Modeled after the Pantheon, the Gran Madre di Dio features a circular plan and a grand dome. The interior, though more austere compared to other Baroque churches in Turin, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, with bas-reliefs depicting her life. Statues of important religious figures, such as San Maurizio and Beata Margherita di Savoia, contribute to the church’s spiritual ambiance.
