Located high above Riva del Garda, the Chapel Santa Barbara offers a unique combination of historical significance and breathtaking natural beauty. Built in 1927 by miners working on the Ponale power plant, this charming chapel sits at an altitude of 625 meters on the rugged slopes of Monte Rocchetta. The journey to this picturesque site is an adventure in itself, providing stunning vistas and a peaceful escape from the busy town below.

Highlights Along the Way

The Bastione

Situated 200 meters above Riva del Garda, the Bastione is a well-preserved fortification with great historical value. Constructed between 1507 and 1509 by the Republic of Venice, it offers panoramic views of the lake and town. It can be reached within approximately 15-20 minutes from the starting point.

Panoramic Vistas

As you make your way up, the trail offers several vantage points that provide sweeping views of Lake Garda, the surrounding mountains, and the town below. These spots are perfect for taking photos and catching your breath.

Chapel Santa Barbara

Upon reaching the chapel, you will be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view. Although the chapel itself is modest, it stands as a tribute to the miners who built it. The surrounding area is ideal for resting and enjoying the tranquil scenery.

Tips for a Successful Hike

  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
  • Weather Considerations: Avoid the trail during or immediately after rain, as the path can become slippery.
  • Fitness Level: The hike is moderately challenging. While it is not technically difficult, it does require a good level of fitness due to the steep ascent and rocky terrain.
