Historical Significance
Commissioned by Petermann von Schenna in 1350 on the remnants of an earlier fortress, Castello di Scena has been owned by several notable Tyrolean families over the centuries, including the Lords of Starkenberg and the Counts of Lichtenstein, before being acquired by Archduke John of Austria in the 19th century. The castle’s rich history is evident in its well-preserved architecture and extensive collections.

Guided Tours
Guided tours offer a deep dive into the castle’s history and treasures. Available from April to October, these tours run Tuesday to Friday, with morning and afternoon slots, and evening tours on Mondays and Thursdays. The tours are conducted in German, but English guidebooks are available for non-German speakers.
The Mausoleum
Don’t miss the nearby neo-Gothic mausoleum, which is the final resting place of Archduke John and his family. This architecturally stunning structure is open to the public and provides a fascinating glimpse into the history and legacy of the Habsburg family.
Castello di Scena is easily accessible from the nearby town of Merano. If you are driving, there is parking space near the mausoleum. For those preferring public transport, buses from Merano run frequently to Scena. Alternatively, enjoy a scenic hike on the Meadow Path, which offers breathtaking views of the castle and surrounding landscape.
