Commissioned by Petermann von Schenna in 1350 on the remnants of an earlier fortress, Castello di Scena has been owned by several notable Tyrolean families over the centuries, including the Lords of Starkenberg and the Counts of Lichtenstein, before being acquired by Archduke John of Austria in the 19th century. The castle’s rich history is evident in its well-preserved architecture and extensive collections.

Art and Artifacts

The castle boasts an impressive collection of artifacts that reflect its storied past. Key highlights include:

• Weapons Collection: Spanning from the 12th to the 19th centuries, this collection features medieval firearms, swords, and even the execution sword of Merano from 1733.
• Paintings and Portraits: Admire works by renowned Tyrolean artists and portraits of the Habsburg family.
• Andreas Hofer Collection: The largest private collection dedicated to the Tyrolean patriot Andreas Hofer, featuring numerous historical artifacts.

Guided Tours

Guided tours offer a deep dive into the castle’s history and treasures. Available from April to October, these tours run Tuesday to Friday, with morning and afternoon slots, and evening tours on Mondays and Thursdays. The tours are conducted in German, but English guidebooks are available for non-German speakers.

The Mausoleum

Don’t miss the nearby neo-Gothic mausoleum, which is the final resting place of Archduke John and his family. This architecturally stunning structure is open to the public and provides a fascinating glimpse into the history and legacy of the Habsburg family.

Tips for Visitors

• Due to high demand and limited slots, it is advisable to book your tour online in advance, especially during peak tourist season.
• Photography is generally not allowed inside the castle, so take advantage of the beautiful exterior views for your photos.
• The castle’s terrain and structure may be challenging for small children and strollers. Consider this when planning your visit.
• The castle is an excellent option for a rainy day, as most of the tour is indoors.

Getting There

Castello di Scena is easily accessible from the nearby town of Merano. If you are driving, there is parking space near the mausoleum. For those preferring public transport, buses from Merano run frequently to Scena. Alternatively, enjoy a scenic hike on the Meadow Path, which offers breathtaking views of the castle and surrounding landscape.
