Main Attractions and Points of Interest

Masso delle Fanciulle (The Lady’s Rock)

One of the most famous spots in the reserve, Masso delle Fanciulle is a natural pool formed by the Cecina River. The cool, crystal-clear waters make it a perfect summer swimming spot. According to legend, three girls once escaped from local nobility and leaped into this river. While the story may remain a myth, the beauty of this location is very real.

Masso degli Specchi (Stone Mirror)

Just a short walk along the river, Masso degli Specchi is named for the stone reflections that create a mirror-like effect on the water. Surrounded by the tranquility of the Tuscan forest, this spot offers a peaceful retreat for those seeking quiet moments in nature.

Medieval Castles

The reserve is also rich in history, dotted with ancient structures like Castello dei Vescovi (Bishop’s Castle) and Castello di Luppiano. These medieval fortresses provide a glimpse into the region’s past, which was once ruled by local bishops and nobility. The Bishop’s Castle also served as a mint during the Middle Ages.

Wildlife and Vegetation

Berignone is a wildlife paradise. The forests are home to an array of animals, including deer, wild boar, hares, and even wolves. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting various birds of prey and woodpeckers. The rich vegetation, which includes oak and holm trees, provides a thriving habitat for nature enthusiasts.

Tips for Visitors

Best Seasons to Visit

Spring and early fall are the ideal times to explore the Berignone Reserve. During these seasons, the climate is mild, the forests are vibrant, and the rivers are full, making them perfect for swimming. While summer can lower water levels, the reserve still offers a serene and cool escape.

What to Bring

Comfortable hiking shoes are essential. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as there are no facilities within the reserve. If you plan to spend the day, pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in one of the many scenic spots.

Swimming

The Cecina River has several swimming spots, with the best being Masso delle Fanciulle and Masso degli Specchi. Be sure to check water levels in advance, as the river can be shallow during the dry season.

Picnicking

There are designated picnic areas where you can relax and take in the forest’s peaceful ambiance. The reserve is family-friendly, offering ample space for children to play. Arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends when it can get crowded.

Hiking and Exploring

Berignone is a hiker’s dream, offering a variety of trails for all levels. Trails are generally well-marked, but caution is advised on lesser-used paths.

For a moderate hike, the trail to Vescovi Castle is highly recommended. This 3 km route provides stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the Cecina River, ending at the castle ruins. Along the way, you’ll encounter colorful wildflowers, and if you’re lucky, you might spot deer or wild boar.

Access

The Berignone Nature Reserve is located near the historic town of Volterra, in the province of Pisa. By car, take the Superstrada from Florence toward Siena, exit at Colle Val D’Elsa, and follow signs for Volterra. Continue in the direction of Mazzolla, where you’ll enter the reserve. Be prepared for scenic yet challenging gravel roads, which may be difficult to navigate in wet weather.

For those traveling by plane, the nearest airports are Galileo Galilei in Pisa and Peretola in Florence. From either, you can enjoy a picturesque drive through Tuscany’s rolling hills.
