It was built in 1865 by the French sculptor Aimé Millet to commemorate Vercingetorix, a Gallic chieftain who led the rebellion against Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars in the 1st century BC.

The statue is made of bronze and stands over 6 meters tall. It depicts Vercingetorix on horseback, wearing his helmet and holding a sword, and is set atop a large pedestal decorated with reliefs of battles and other scenes from Gallic history.

The monument is located near the site of the Battle of Alesia, which was a decisive victory for Caesar and marked the end of Gallic resistance to Roman rule.
