The cemetery was established in June 1944, shortly after the Allied D-Day landings on June 6th, and was used as a temporary burial site for soldiers who died during the Normandy campaign.
The cemetery contains the graves of 4,648 Commonwealth soldiers who died during the D-Day landings and the ensuing Battle of Normandy, as well as a number of German soldiers who were later reinterred in the cemetery.
The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is open to the public. It serves as a place of remembrance and a reminder of the sacrifices made during the Second World War.
