The basilica was built in the 11th and 12th centuries on the site of an earlier church, and is dedicated to Saint Saturnin, the first bishop of Toulouse. The church is famous for its architectural features, including its massive nave with barrel vaulting, the ornate chapels that line the aisles, and the intricate carvings on the capitals of the columns.

The basilica also contains a number of important works of art, including a Romanesque sculpture of Saint Saturnin, a 13th-century reliquary containing the remains of the saint, and a 14th-century rose window.

Today, the Basilica of Saint-Sernin is a popular tourist attraction and an important site for pilgrims, as well as a functioning parish church. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.
